Anthesteria or May Celebrations

It was 1st of May and May wreaths were hung on doorways or balconies, but my May wreaths were floating on white fluffy clouds and changed shapes as they were slowly drifted away by the gentle wind …

Well and carefully collected flowers from the garden, waiting to take their role in the May celebrations … Each one bright and cheerful ready to sacrifice its beauty for the purposes of the occasion …

Numerous Pelargoniums ready for the flight ...

My Pelargoniums were ready for the flight …

Pelargoniums were very eager to participate in the celebrations and especially in the flight performance.Presumably,it was because of their name,as pelargos in Greek means stork. They had a very good reason to take part in the event and enjoy happy flights up in the sky …

May,the last month of Spring, takes its name from the ancient Greek word Maia which meant nurse or midwife and assisted women in childbirth ;  it was also one of the deities that protected fertility and birth.

And why my title : Anthesteria

The name Anthesteria (Ἀνθεστήρια), comes from the word ἄνθος (plural: ἄνθη or ἄνθεα = flowers or blossoms.

White and Purple stars in my garden …

Anhesteria,in ancient times, was a celebration in honour of Dionysos, the God of theatre, which took place in Athens and lasted three days. They were festivals of souls, plants and flowers, celebrating the rebirth of man and nature. The three days were almost completely separate events, but they had several things in common. The story behind Antesteria is long and very allegorical, but I don’t want to expand on overarching details,I simply want to let you enjoy the rebirth of nature after the rough winter …

By roses, and sleep that falls from bright shaking leaves. And a pasture for horses blossoms with the flowers of spring, and breezes are flowing here like honey and Nectar in golden cups, mixed with a festive joy :Come to me here …    Sappho Poems

  18. Hi Doda,
Beautiful post and I love the fact that It is related to that special celebration: Anhesteria… The rebirth of man and nature, and a tribute to Dyonisos. Really pretty, my friend..
    Best wishes xo, Aquileana 🙂

    Like

    • Thanks kindly Aquileana for your nice words ! Feel really glad you appreciated the ancient connections.Anthesteria is a festival of deep, emotional involvement and transformation within yourself is almost irrevocable. The concept is filled with joy and takes all the heavy burdens away from you. Rejoice and put all the ritualistic procedures into perspective … You study the Greek Classics, you can easily find the grounding you need in Mythology related to Reality …
All the best, Doda 🙂 xxx
