* 8323 Krimigis is a main-belt asteroid discovered on October 17, 1979 and named after Dr Stamatios Krimigis.
*The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Trophy for 2015 was awarded to Stamatios M. Krimigis, who for 45 years has pioneered the exploration of our Solar System and beyond while at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland.His visionary work developing new and innovative ways for NASA to explore the solar system provided the Laboratory with the opportunity to contribute engineering and science expertise to humanity’s quest to understand our Universe.
Currently, he is involved in missions to Mercury, Saturn, Pluto, the heliosphere, and participating in path-breaking contributions to understanding the transition zone to interstellar space.

Wonderful post, Doda! I love exploration of space. And try to read all news about discoveries as they happen. Thank you for introducing Mr. Krimigis – he is a wonderful pioneer. I missed the lunar eclipse 😦 It all happened under heavy cloud cover here.

I am an astronomy buff Doda and I love this post- a space in the immense universe!! Wonderful info on Krimigis and my imagination and mind are boggled at the thought of the transition zone to interstellar space and the mysterious energy ribbon that encircles our solar system out there before(?) the Oort cloud!! Thank you Doda for writing about him!

Just a couple of hours ago,I tweeted away about the 2nd Symposium of “The Seven Wise Men of Cosmology”,on October 2, addressing fundamental questions as to how the universe began and where we come from.There will be a live webcast so as to reach out to as many researchers and academics as possible.Then,on October 3, the scientists will visit the NEO Environmental Observatory at the Costa Navarino Resort in Messinia, ancient Messene on October 4, as well as an event organised by the Greek Union of Physicists in Kalamata.You can join them and discuss about the giant shell of the icy bodies that encircles our solar system … Thank you dear Cybele.I must make a beeline for your own Cosmos,I’m rather late … 🙂

One of the things we always noticed about Greece was the purity of the light at certain times of the day. Your photograph captures that. I do remember seeing windmills like these on Leros too. Lovely post xxx

Loved the video 🙂 and I learnt something new 🙂 I was not into star gazing back in 79 🙂 I was up to my armpits in two children who would have been 4 and 2 🙂
I did star gaze into the heavens last evening dear Doda.. and your capture of the moon is better than my own.. I set my alarm and was up at 2 3,-30am, to watch the eclipse for 3am.. and was not disappointed.. It was spectacular and it turned a beautiful shade to own the title of Blood Moon. 🙂

Your introduction to Stamatios Krimigis was inspiring and humbling, dearest Doda. I enjoyed your photos and the beautiful island of Chios so much. And the video was very moving–hearing Mr. Krimigis’ voice and watching the events that shaped his life, and his vast and profound contributions to our solar system too. Last night I enjoyed watching the long event of the lunar eclipse, sat bundled in a blanket on my deck as it rose over the valley, even heard an owl. There were many stars and planets out during the eclipse, and then when earth’s shadow passed and the moon was exposed, the stars faded in lieu of the lunar spotlight. Enjoyed your post so much, as always. 😀 😀

I love these photos dear Doda and it’s interesting to learn about Stamatios. I haven’t had much luck with the lunar eclipse here – as soon as it started, the moon and everything else was covered by dense fog and I could only see it on the web.
