Nature’s Secrets & Garden Life
Hidden Treasures & the Story of the Potter Wasp in the Garden
Our painter was the Archaeologist & me,the Curator of a museum with potteryware.Of course,we never painted the wooden door underneath …
She was diligently and silently working under the wooden door next to the garden, but we had never taken notice of her.I had seen her feeding on floral nectar and drinking water, she is a great pollinator too.Who could have imagined what she was up to?Once, she was under the barbeque shed and near a Black Hole ready to get into her private appartment.I had then checked out the barbeque space and it all seemed as if the great Pollinator & Potter were on the Red Planet.
But,the great Nest Builder had other plans, she had decided to decorate our wooden door with a whole series of pots in a row,to show off her amazing skills and techniques.Superb structures!Don’t they look like ancient Amphoras?
It’s said that their nests of mud, strengthened with their saliva, have therapeutic properties for skin infections, rashes & other diseases.
We all know about folk medicine which had been used for thousands of years before drug companies and industrial, synthetic medicine took over.
Art by Friendly,Harmless Insects in the garden, who happily buzz and collect mud to build their “amphoras” in sheltered spots. There’s room in the garden for every Flower and Insect.
And,while Ms Potter was silently working,Hermes and I were collecting Rose Hips from our Dog Rose to make herbal infusions and jam.
Once we finished,I brought out a blue platter to put our rose hips on and asked Hermes to sit on his favourite garden table, which is made of Lava from the Stratovolcano of Mount Etna and it’s painted by an Italian artist. In the meantime, I was thinking of blending the rose hips with some Claude Monet rose petals I had collected from a painting in Albertina – Museum in Vienna. They would perfectly mix together and make our jam sophisticated …
The compound I had imagined was ready and made Hermes and me gratified in the retreat of the soul,in our garden, where we commune with nature and observe her wonders.
I love mixing and correlating the state of affairs to make life beautiful, in and outside the garden.
Nature & Art Heals Body & Mind …

What a pleasing visit to the garden, Doda, thank you for sharing the art of nature here. The potter wasp nests are exquisite, what a delightful find! The roses, so beautiful, from your garden as well as Monet’s. I was especially taken with the passionate blue of the platter graced with the arrangement of rosehips and rose leaves. The rose platter is a work of art, my friend, and I so appreciate your uniqueness in creativity and your love for all beauty.

A beautiful post, indeed. Nature and Art certainly do heal the body and mind. You have a beautiful garden.
I’ve not seen mud nests like that in my area. So many and beautifully arrayed.
By the way, your blog looks kind of surreal with all those snowflakes falling across that beautiful blue sky. 🙂 🙂 🙂

What a beautiful dog. Hope he realizes how lucky he is to have such a lovely table to rest on. I once had a wasp make a nest out of cat litter over one of the litter boxes inside the house. Unfortunately I had to get rid of it as I couldn’t have wasps flying around indoors. I put it outside on the table but the larvae inside died. It was about one inch (2.5 cm) by one and a half inches (3.8 cm). Love the rose hips.

Isn’t it a marvellous display?Such symmetry and order in her “underdoor museum”!When the painter discovered them,I couldn’t believe my eyes.Hermes and the rest of the dog family respected her art, they started sniffing and sniffing but they didn’t destroy the amphoras.
How nice to hear you have been in Scotland!Big thank yous for gracing my post with your presence in the garden and for your nice words, dearest Sue 🙂 Have a great time ~ Take care ❤ xxoxox

A beautiful and uplifting post, Doda. I can almost smell the aromas around your garden and hear the buzzing of the great pollinator. All insects work so hard and we can only admire their industrious nature, The potter wasp is so appropriately named and her pots are amazing! I hope your jam turned out to be delicious… and your unique table-top is just perfect, It reminds me of my own visit to Mount Etna. Lovely post, Doda, and beautiful photos. 😀

Well, I had to double take the work she’d done. Amazing truly. I really thought…a wasp did this? Am I reading this wrongly? And I am glad to re-evaluate wasps because seriously they get a bad rep, people saying they are the one insect that contributes nothing to the planet. I have to say that after I was stung that time …in Greece actually, the first time I knew I was a badly badly allergic, I have thought the same. But your post shows otherwise, because yous ee beautry everywhere in everything xxxxxxxxx

Ms Potter wasp is a hard working lady like you,she likes to write her own stories too but in a different way … I was watching her coming and going and I had the impression that she was just an ordinary insect buzzing around aimlessly, but when I saw the symmetrical row of her vessels,I understood once more that all the living organisms on our planet have incredible hidden skills we are not familiar with.We don’t have to study entomology to find out;just a closer look at our natural world enables us to discover nature’s wonders.”There’s beauty everywhere and in everything … ” if we notice, darling, darling Shey xoxoxoxox

I can understand how you feel about the wasp stings,if you’re allergic to their stings,it can be fatal ….
Potter wasps have the potential to deliver painful stings, but are not aggressive at all and rarely attack humans … Just look at her orderly art under the wooden door, she is really blessed.Btw,I was away from WP for almost a week,I have not forgotten you,I’ve seen your recent posts, make sure I won’t miss them 🙂 ❤ xxx
