Sculptures from the East Pediment of the Parthenon in the British Museum.
High Classical c. 450 – 400 BCE Architectural Sculpture
*Carved from a Single piece of Penteliko Marble.

The Miraculous Birth of the Goddess Athena.

Since the sides of the pediments slope toward the corner angles,Phidias had to solve the problem of fitting the sculptures into a diminishing triangular space. The only figure still to have a head,is the reclining Dionysos.
All others have disappeared or been dispersed across Europe. The statues are preserved in the Acropolis Museum in Athens, the British Museum, and the Louvre Museum.

Relaxed poses of statues exhibiting interaction with each other, graceful architectural curves of garments in deep relief providing high contrast between light and shadows, and
perfectly harmonised with the Doric order …

Look at Dionysus’ muscle structure,Demeter and Persephone in their diploïdions over their girdled chitons, and Iris, the wind-footed Goddess, shown in rapid movement leftwards.
She fleets as the wind, her right knee is bent, she is clad in a chiton with a girdle and a diploïdion too.The drapery is flying out behind.

*Some say that the three Goddesses are Hestia,Dione, and Aphrodite,or,Hera,Nike and Hebe,or “The Moirai”,the three sisters Κλωθώ,Λάχεσις,& Ἄτροπος (Clotho,Lachesis,& Atropos),the female personifications of Fate & Destiny …

How the Immortal Grace of the ancient Greek Sculptures Inspired Rodin …
